Opened: 2001 Events Hosted As part of the Jim and Julie Turner Riverfront Athletic Park, the Baylor Tennis Center includes nine outdoor courts, six indoor courts, a clubhouse and offices, and renovation of the current Streich courts. Ground will be broken soon on the indoor courts. The new facility was built at the end of the Dutch Schroeder Athletic Plaza adjacent to the Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field, Baylor Ballpark (baseball) and Getterman Stadium (softball). Six individual outdoor courts are featured in a beautiful tree-lined amphitheater setting overlooking the Baylor Marina inlet. The outdoor courts also are individually enclosed for maximum player convenience. A sloped viewing amphitheater overlooks the six initial outdoor courts, which are interconnected with an attractive and inviting landscaped walk system. Separate entrances for each court maximize player convenience, while courtside seating is available for 3,000 spectators. The team clubhouse contains a pro shop, health training rooms, meeting rooms, public and team locker rooms and coaches' offices. The focal point of the complex is the center court, which is flanked by two additional courts that convert to seating for featured matches. Still to be built, six individual indoor tennis courts, which will be the finest and most innovative tennis facility in the South and Southwestern United States, will feature a state-of-the-art tennis environment emphasizing indirect, highly reflective tennis lighting and individualized and separately enclosed tennis courts. The current Streich Tennis Courts will be updated and realigned to enhance their appearance and competitive desirability. "The tennis complex at Baylor is a dream come true for many who have envisioned our school as a national power in the collegiate sport of tennis," said Scott Livesay, chairman of the Big 12 Tennis Committee for the City of Waco/Big 12 Task Force. "All past efforts have not gone in vain as Baylor's president, regents and athletic director have now made a long term commitment. Only the sky is the limit, and we are truly excited about the future of Baylor tennis with these indoor and outdoor facilities that will be second to none across the country." The building is taking place in four phases, two of which have been completed. Phase I, which began construction in May 2000, included six outdoor courts and the clubhouse. Phase II was the center court complex, followed by Phase III, the indoor tennis facility. The final portion of the project, the renovation of the Streich complex, is Phase IV. Construction will begin on Phases III-IV as funds are available. In May 2006, Baylor's courts hosted the Big 12 Championships for the second time since 2001. The women's tennis team claimed the post-season tournament title for the first time in program history. Weeks Baylor hosted the NCAA Regionals where both men's and women's teams advanced through to the national championship tournament.
