Lady Bear Hoops in Top 10 in Two More Polls
Sept. 22, 2004 WACO, Texas - Baylor University women's basketball team nabbed its fourth preseason Top 10 ranking when Lindy's Magazine and Athlon Magazine ranked them eighth and 10th, respectively. Baylor's Sophia Young, a junior forward/post who hails from St. Vincent, West Indies, was named preseason second-team All-American by both publications. She has also been named to State Farm Wade Trophy Watch List. Young was a first-team All-Big 12 selection last season as a sophomore and was named to the all-tournament team at the Big 12 Tournament in Dallas. She led the team and was among the Big 12's leaders in both scoring and rebounding with 16.7 points and 8.6 rebounds a game. The talented player needed only 53 games to reach 500 rebounds and only 67 games to go over 1,000 points. She now has 1,083 points and 653 rebounds in her two-year career. In addition, she has recorded 27 double-doubles.
Athlon's magazine hit the stands last week and Lindy's annual College Basketball Preview issue is due out this week. Baylor returns four starters from last year's team that advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time in school history. Baylor's 10 returning players accounted for 73.4 percent of last season's points and 75.8 percent of the rebounds. The Lady Bears finished the season with a 26-9 mark, second best in school history. Tennessee, who posted a two-point win (71-69) over Baylor in the Sweet 16 last season, is listed at No. 1 in Lindy's and Athlon ranks fellow Big 12 opponent Texas as No. 1. Baylor's first opponent of the season, LSU, is listed at No. 3 in Athlon and No. 2 on Lindy's list.
