Dec. 22, 2007

WACO, Texas - Head volleyball coach Jim Barnes announced the signing of Briana Tolbert to a national letter of intent on Saturday. Tolbert is set to join the Bears for the 2008 season.

Tolbert, a middle blocker from Houston, Texas, is currently a senior at Cypress Springs High School. She led her team to a 14-15 overall record as a senior. She tallied 334 kills and 74 total blocks (34 solo) in earning all-district honors for the second season. She ended her senior season as the kills leader for District 17-5A.

"Briana is a fast, explosive athlete," said Barnes. "She has the physical ability to be an all-conference performer and will look to get on the floor early in her career. She will make an impact in the middle because her combination of physicality and quickness is very rare."

Tolbert has been ranked as the 62nd-ranked recruit from the class of 2008 according to prepvolleyball.com. The recruiting service also ranks Tolbert as the No. 19 middle blocker in the nation and the fifth-best middle blocker in Texas.

Earlier this fall, Tolbert was named to the Texas All-Star team, and was voted team Most Valuable Player. She earned first-team all-district honors and was an academic all-district selection.
